China increases efforts to draw Paraguay away from Taiwan

Asuncion: China is increasing its diplomatic efforts to persuade Paraguay to end its long standing relations with Taiwan, as Beijing tries to gain another international ally and reduce Taiwan’s global support.

Reports say Chinese officials have been reaching out to Paraguay’s political leaders, lawmakers and media figures. Several members of Paraguay’s political class have been invited to visit China in recent months. During these visits they are shown China’s economic development, modern infrastructure and possible trade opportunities.

China is believed to be highlighting the economic benefits Paraguay could receive if it established formal diplomatic ties with Beijing. Paraguay is a major exporter of agricultural products such as soybeans and beef, and China is one of the world’s largest markets for these goods. However, Paraguay cannot trade directly with China on a large scale because it officially recognises Taiwan instead.

Paraguay remains Taiwan’s only diplomatic partner in South America, making the relationship strategically important for Taipei. Taiwan has supported Paraguay for decades through development projects, scholarships and technical assistance.

Despite growing debate inside the country, Paraguay’s government has reaffirmed its commitment to Taiwan. President Santiago Peña has said the partnership remains strong and warned that some countries that switched recognition to China did not receive the economic benefits they expected.

The situation highlights the continuing global competition between China and Taiwan for diplomatic recognition. If Paraguay changes its position, Taiwan would lose its last ally in South America.
