Coordinated Drone and Rocket Assault Targets U.S. Embassy in Baghdad

Baghdad: A coordinated and high-intensity attack involving drones and rockets struck the United States Embassy in Baghdad early Tuesday, underscoring the deepening instability across the Middle East amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Iraqi security officials described the assault as one of the most serious incidents targeting American diplomatic infrastructure in recent weeks.

According to security sources, at least five drones along with multiple rockets were launched toward Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, the enclave that houses key government institutions and foreign missions, including the U.S. embassy. Residents across the capital reported hearing loud explosions as defensive systems were activated to counter the incoming aerial threats.

Witnesses said the embassy’s Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar (C-RAM) defense system intercepted several of the incoming drone’s mid-air. However, at least one drone evaded interception and struck inside the embassy compound, igniting a fire and sending thick smoke into the sky. The extent of damage and any potential casualties were not immediately confirmed, and the U.S. embassy had yet to issue an official response at the time of reporting.

The latest strike marks a significant escalation in a series of attacks targeting U.S. assets in Iraq since the outbreak of the current regional war in late February. In recent days alone, the embassy compound has been hit by missile strikes, including an earlier incident that damaged a helipad, while rockets and drones have repeatedly targeted diplomatic and military installations in and around Baghdad.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attack, suspicion has largely fallen on Iran-backed militia factions operating within Iraq. These groups have intensified their operations in retaliation for U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iranian targets and allied forces across the region.

The broader conflict has rapidly expanded beyond its initial theatre, drawing in multiple countries and transforming Iraq into a critical arena for proxy confrontation. The killing of militia leaders and fighters in recent airstrikes, particularly near border regions such as al-Qaim, has further fueled retaliatory actions against American interests.

In response to the escalating threat, Iraqi authorities have tightened security across Baghdad. The Green Zone has been sealed off, and additional forces have been deployed to prevent further breaches and maintain order. The situation has also prompted heightened alerts for diplomatic missions and foreign nationals in the country.

The attack comes amid a wider surge in violence across the Middle East, with drone and missile strikes reported in multiple countries, disruptions to critical oil routes, and mounting fears of a prolonged regional war. Analysts warn that continued assaults on diplomatic facilities could further inflame tensions and draw more actors into an already volatile conflict.
