Health cannot be a luxury for few, says Pope Leo XIV

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has called for fair and equal access to healthcare, warning that growing inequalities can harm society and even lead to conflict.

Speaking at a conference in the Vatican on Wednesday, Pope said that universal health coverage is not just a policy goal but a moral responsibility for any society that wants to be just. The meeting was organised by the Council of the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe, the World Health Organization European region, and the Italian Episcopal Conference.

His remarks came as a new European health equity report highlighted the struggles faced by many people, especially those living in poverty, isolation and social exclusion.

Pope said that healthcare should never be treated as a privilege for a few, but as a basic need for everyone. He stressed that access to healthcare is essential for maintaining social peace and stability.

He also raised concern about mental health, particularly among young people, saying it requires urgent attention across many countries in Europe.

Reflecting on Christian teachings, including the message of Saint Augustine and the encyclical Fratelli tutti by Pope Francis, the Pope warned against growing indifference to the suffering of others. He said that ignoring the pain of the poor, the lonely and those pushed to the margins weakens society.

He urged people, especially Christians, to show compassion and solidarity, saying that caring for others is essential to building a just and peaceful community.

Pope also highlighted the role of the Church and international organisations in addressing healthcare inequalities, especially for the most vulnerable.

He ended his message by calling on Christians to live with a spirit of compassion and service, inspired by the example of the Good Samaritan, so that societies can grow in unity, wellbeing and peace.
