Pope calls global bishops to Rome for meeting on families

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has called the presidents of Bishops’ Conferences from around the world to gather in Rome in October 2026 for a major meeting focused on families and how to share the Gospel in today’s changing world.

In a letter released on Wednesday,  Pope reflected on the tenth anniversary of Amoris Laetitia, originally published by Pope Francis in 2016. He described the document as a message of hope for family life and said its teachings remain important for the Church today.

Pope noted that the document encouraged both reflection and pastoral renewal within the Church. He said its insights must continue to guide how the Church supports families in a rapidly changing world.

Announcing the October meeting, Pope Leo XIV said it will be a time for listening and shared discernment. Church leaders will discuss practical ways to proclaim the Gospel to families today, while also learning from what is already being done in different parts of the world.

In his letter, Pope also highlighted the importance of another key Church document, Familiaris Consortio by Pope John Paul II, noting that both teachings have strengthened the Church’s commitment to family life.

He stressed that real understanding of families comes from listening to them. Echoing the approach of Pope Francis, he said the Church must pay attention to the experiences of families, including their joys, struggles, and hopes.

Calling the family the foundation of society, Pope Leo XIV said it is also a place where faith is first taught and lived. Through marriage, he explained, families become domestic churches that pass on faith to future generations.

At the same time, Pope acknowledged that modern society presents new challenges. He said the Church must develop new pastoral approaches that help parents guide their children and deepen spiritual life within the home.

He also urged stronger support for families facing poverty, violence, and other hardships.

Looking ahead, Pope Leo XIV said the Church must present the beauty of marriage in a way that speaks to young people, even while recognizing the difficulties many families face today.

He concluded by calling for a renewed commitment to family life, expressing hope that married couples will live their vocation fully and that young people will be inspired to embrace marriage within the Church.
