US allows limited Iran oil sales to ease global supply concerns

Washington: The United States has announced a temporary relaxation of sanctions on Iranian oil, aiming to ease pressure on global energy markets as tensions in the Middle East continue to disrupt supply.

The decision allows the sale and delivery of Iranian oil that is already loaded on ships and waiting at sea. Officials said the measure will remain in place for a short period, expected to last about a month, to help stabilise rising oil prices.

The move comes at a time when the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran has pushed oil prices sharply higher. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes, have added to concerns about supply shortages.

By permitting this limited release, the United States hopes to bring additional oil into the market quickly and reduce the strain on fuel prices worldwide. Reports suggest that a significant volume of oil currently stranded at sea could now reach buyers.

However, the relief comes with strict conditions. The waiver applies only to oil that is already in transit and does not allow new production or fresh deals. Financial restrictions on Iran also remain in place, meaning the country may still face difficulties in accessing payments from these sales.

US officials have stressed that the broader sanctions policy against Iran has not changed and that pressure on Tehran will continue.

Energy analysts say the move may provide short term relief to global markets, especially for major buyers in Asia. At the same time, they warn that the impact could be limited if tensions in the region continue or worsen.

The decision highlights the challenges faced by governments in balancing political pressure with the need to maintain stable energy supplies during a time of crisis.
