UN cooperates with Trump-led board on Gaza rebuilding, urges respect for international law

New York:  United Nations Secretary General António Guterres has said the UN is working with an initiative led by Donald J. Trump to support the rebuilding of Gaza, while making clear that any broader role must respect international law.

Speaking about the plan known as the Board of Peace, Guterres said the United Nations is cooperating on efforts focused mainly on reconstruction. He explained that rebuilding homes, infrastructure and basic services in Gaza is already in line with the mandate given by the UN Security Council.

At the same time, he stressed that the UN does not support expanding the board’s authority beyond reconstruction. He underlined that any political or security arrangements must follow the principles of the UN Charter and international law.

The Board of Peace, proposed by Trump earlier this year, is designed to guide post war recovery in Gaza. It is part of a wider peace plan that has drawn global attention and raised questions about how it would work alongside existing international institutions.

Recent developments show that the initiative is moving forward but facing challenges. Representatives linked to the board have held talks with Hamas in Cairo as part of efforts to maintain a fragile ceasefire and move reconstruction plans ahead.

However, the situation remains tense. The ongoing conflict involving Iran has put pressure on the Gaza process, with fears that instability in the region could affect the ceasefire and delay rebuilding work.

Guterres also pointed to the wider regional risks, including concerns over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. He said the United Nations is ready to support efforts to reduce tensions and ensure stability in key global routes.

The cooperation between the UN and the Board of Peace signals a cautious step forward in rebuilding Gaza, but uncertainty remains over how the broader political future of the territory will be shaped.
