Middle East tensions may push up soft drink prices in India

New Delhi: Rising tensions in the Middle East are beginning to affect everyday products in India, with one of the country’s largest Coca Cola bottlers warning that prices may soon increase.

SLMG Beverages, a major bottling partner of Coca Cola in India, said the ongoing conflict is driving up the cost of packaging materials such as plastic bottles, caps, labels and cartons. These materials are closely linked to crude oil, and global oil price movements are now feeding into production costs.

Company officials said a decision on price changes has not yet been taken, but a review is expected around April. They added that any increase will depend on how competitors respond and how consumers react in a highly price sensitive market.

The warning comes as costs across the beverage sector are already rising. Industry trends show that polymer prices have surged sharply in recent weeks, while the cost of bottle caps has increased significantly. Similar pressures have already led to price increases in bottled water, indicating that soft drinks could follow.

However, companies are facing strong competition, which is limiting their ability to raise prices quickly. The entry of Reliance Industries with its Campa Cola brand has intensified price competition, forcing established players to be cautious. Industry executives note that prices in this segment have remained largely unchanged for several years due to such competition.

Despite these challenges, demand for beverages in India continues to grow. The market is expected to expand rapidly over the coming years, and SLMG Beverages is investing in new plants to increase production capacity. The company has reported strong growth in both sales and profits, showing that consumption remains robust.

The situation highlights how global conflicts can quickly affect local markets. A war thousands of kilometres away is now influencing the cost of everyday drinks, and if tensions continue, consumers in India may soon have to pay more for popular beverages.
