Pope says children’s eyes in war should awaken humanity

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has called on the world to look at war through the eyes of children, saying their silent suffering can help humanity rediscover compassion and change its ways.

In a letter written to readers of Popotus, a weekly publication for children published with Avvenire,  Pope reflected on the impact of war and modern society on young minds.

The message comes as Popotus marks 30 years since its first issue in March 1996.

Pope said that in a time of growing fear and conflict, people must learn again to see the world with pure and simple eyes like children. He said that the “lost” and troubled eyes of children affected by war can move hearts and lead people toward true change.

He also raised concern about the digital age and the growing influence of artificial intelligence. He warned that children should not come to depend on AI tools as their closest companions or as the only source of knowledge. According to him, this could weaken their ability to think, create, and build real human relationships.

Pope urged parents and teachers to take responsibility for guiding children and protecting them from an inhuman approach to education and information. He stressed that learning today must go beyond technology and help children remain fully human.

At the same time, he encouraged young readers with a hopeful message. He told them that it is possible to restore beauty in the world and that they can help adults see life with new wonder and trust.

He reminded them to hold on to important values as they grow, including trust in love, the power of a smile, the courage to say sorry, and the importance of making peace.

Referring to the words of Jesus, Pope said becoming like children does not mean going backward, but keeping a special way of seeing the truth and finding simple answers to difficult questions.

He concluded by thanking parents and teachers for their care and dedication, encouraging them to help children grow with love, creativity, and a sense of purpose, so they can build a better future.
