Kalpetta: In a significant civic engagement initiative, the Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM) of the Mananthavady Diocese convened ‘Janashabdam 2026’ in Kalpetta, creating a vibrant platform to highlight the pressing concerns and survival challenges faced by the people of Wayanad. The public discussion, held at the old post office premises, brought together political representatives, youth, and citizens to deliberate on the region’s developmental stagnation and policy shortcomings.
The event served as a rare forum where voices from across the political spectrum converged to address the grievances of the local population. Key representatives included District President Prashant Malavayal representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), former District Panchayat President Samshad Marakkar from the Congress, and DYFI District President K. Francis representing the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM). Each leader articulated their party’s stance while responding to pointed questions raised by the audience.
Central to the discussion were some of Wayanad’s most urgent issues. Participants voiced deep concerns over recurring wildlife attacks that threaten livelihoods and safety, the ongoing crisis in the agricultural sector, and the persistent gaps in healthcare and educational infrastructure. These topics were explored under the broader theme, “Challenges of Wayanad: Popular Needs and Political Approaches,” reflecting the gravity of the region’s socio-economic realities.
The session was moderated by former KCYM President Sajin Jose, who guided the dialogue with a focus on constructive engagement and accountability. A strong consensus emerged during the discussion on the need for youth to rise above political divides and unite for the protection and progress of their homeland.
The gathering witnessed an enthusiastic turnout, with hundreds of young people and members of the public participating actively. The programme was organized under the leadership of the KCYM Mananthavady Diocese, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to amplifying grassroots voices.
KCYM Diocese President Nikhil Choodiyankal, in his concluding remarks, emphasized that such public forums would continue to be organized, ensuring that the concerns of Wayanad’s people reach decision-makers and inspire meaningful action.
