“Defend Life in an Age of War: Pope Leo XIV Urges Protection from Conception to Natural Death”

Vatican City: Speaking during his Wednesday General Audience, Pope Leo XIV issued a strong appeal for the protection of human life at every stage, warning that the “madness of war” gripping parts of the world makes this responsibility more urgent than ever.

Addressing pilgrims, particularly those from Poland, the Pope recalled the country’s annual Day for the Sanctity of Life, observed on March 25 in conjunction with the Feast of the Annunciation. Instituted in 2004, the observance underscores the Church’s teaching on the dignity and inviolability of human life.

“In a time marked by the madness of war, it is important to defend life from conception to its natural end,” the Pope stressed, reiterating the Church’s consistent call to uphold life amid violence, instability, and moral uncertainty.

Turning to French-speaking faithful, Pope Leo encouraged Church leaders to boldly proclaim the Gospel and inspire believers to take an active role in building a peaceful world. He emphasized that faith must not remain passive, but should translate into concrete efforts toward reconciliation, justice, and harmony.

Extending his message to Arabic-speaking Christians, the Pope highlighted the universal mission of the faithful, reminding them that every Christian is called to live as a loving disciple and a courageous witness to the Gospel across all corners of the world.

Reflecting on the significance of the Solemnity of the Annunciation, the Holy Father concluded by pointing to the example of the Virgin Mary. He prayed that her openness to God’s will would inspire all believers to respond with readiness, faith, and obedience in their own lives.

The Pope’s message comes at a time when global conflicts continue to intensify, reinforcing his call for a renewed commitment to safeguarding life and fostering peace in a fractured world.
