Beijing deploys converted drone jets near Taiwan strait raising security concerns

Beijing: China has deployed a large number of old fighter jets converted into drones at air bases close to the Taiwan Strait, according to a new report, raising fresh concerns about military tensions in the region.

The report says more than 200 ageing J 6 fighter jets have been modified into unmanned aerial vehicles and stationed at several bases, mainly in Fujian province which directly faces Taiwan. Another base has been identified in Guangdong. Satellite images have confirmed the presence of these aircraft lined up at multiple locations.

Military experts believe these converted jets are not meant for long term missions but are designed to be used in the early stages of a conflict. They are expected to act like cruise missiles or decoys, flying towards targets to overwhelm air defence systems.

The strategy is seen as a cost effective way to pressure Taiwan’s military. These drones are much cheaper compared to modern missiles, but they could force Taiwan to use expensive interceptor systems to defend itself. This could quickly drain resources and create confusion during an attack.

Analysts say this move reflects a growing trend in modern warfare where large numbers of low cost drones are used to challenge stronger defence systems. Similar tactics have been seen in other conflicts in recent years.

At the same time, the deployment does not indicate an immediate plan for war. Assessments from the United States suggest that China is still preparing its military capabilities and may not be ready for a full scale invasion of Taiwan before 2027.

China has been increasing its military activities around Taiwan in recent years, including frequent air and naval exercises near the island. Taiwan, in response, has been strengthening its defence systems and planning to improve its ability to counter drone attacks.

The latest development highlights how the situation around the Taiwan Strait is becoming more complex, with both sides preparing for new forms of warfare that rely on speed, numbers and advanced technology.
