Catholic population grows steadily as Africa sees strong rise

Vatican City: The global Catholic population has continued to grow steadily, with Africa showing the most significant increase, according to new data released by the Vatican’s latest statistical reports.

Figures from the Annuario Pontificio 2026 and the Annuarium Statisticum Ecclesiae 2024 show that the number of Catholics worldwide rose from about 1.406 billion in 2023 to more than 1.422 billion in 2024. This marks a growth of just over one percent, keeping pace with the overall rise in the global population.

Africa has emerged as the fastest growing region for the Catholic Church. The number of Catholics on the continent increased from just over 281 million to more than 288 million within a year. This strong growth has raised Africa’s share of the global Catholic population to just above 20 percent.

Europe, on the other hand, continues to experience slower growth. Catholic numbers there rose only slightly, and the continent’s share of the global Catholic population has declined marginally. The Americas remain home to the largest number of Catholics, accounting for nearly half of the global total.

The data also show differences in how widely the Catholic faith is present in each region. Catholics make up a large share of the population in the Americas and Europe, while the proportion is lower in Africa and much smaller in Asia.

The Church’s pastoral workforce has also grown slightly. By the end of 2024, more than 4.4 million people were engaged in Church work, including bishops, priests, religious members, and lay workers. The number of bishops and priests has seen small increases worldwide.

At the same time, the number of people preparing for the priesthood has declined globally. Africa stands out as the only region where vocations continue to grow, highlighting its increasing importance in the life of the Church.

In terms of sacramental life, baptisms saw a small decline, while First Communions and Confirmations increased slightly. Catholic marriages worldwide reached more than 1.8 million.

The latest figures show a Church that remains stable worldwide, with its future growth increasingly shaped by the rise of Catholic communities in Africa.
