UK prime minister Keir Starmer holds talks with Syria’s president on migration and security

London: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in London on Monday to discuss migration, border security and cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting focused mainly on ways to reduce irregular migration and improve the return of migrants. The UK raised concerns about people travelling through dangerous routes to reach Europe and stressed the need for better coordination with Syria on returning those who are not eligible to stay.

Both sides also discussed how to tackle human smuggling networks that help migrants move from the Middle East to Europe. The UK government has been increasing efforts to stop such movements before migrants reach its borders.

Border security was another key issue in the talks. The two leaders agreed on the importance of sharing information and strengthening cooperation to control illegal crossings and improve monitoring systems.

During the meeting, Starmer also welcomed Syria’s actions against the Islamic State and highlighted the need for continued cooperation in fighting terrorism. Both countries said working together on security could help bring more stability to the region.

The discussions also touched on wider issues in the Middle East, including ongoing tensions and the need for economic recovery in the region.

The meeting reflects a gradual shift in relations between Western countries and Syria’s current leadership. Since coming to power in 2024, President Ahmed al-Sharaa has been seeking stronger international ties, while European countries are increasingly linking their diplomatic efforts with migration control.

The UK government said the talks were part of its broader plan to manage migration more effectively by working with countries of origin and transit, while also addressing security concerns.
