Orion spacecraft completes historic journey around the Moon

Florida: The NASA Artemis II mission has marked a major step in human space exploration as the Orion spacecraft successfully travelled around the Moon and is now on its way back to Earth.

Carrying four astronauts, the Orion spacecraft completed a close flyby of the Moon, becoming the first crewed mission to reach the lunar region in more than 50 years since the Apollo era. The spacecraft moved along a free return path, which allows it to loop around the Moon and safely return to Earth without needing extra propulsion.

During the journey, the crew reached a record distance of more than 400,000 kilometres from Earth. This surpasses the distance achieved during the Apollo 13 mission and marks the farthest humans have travelled in space.

As Orion passed behind the Moon, communication with mission control was briefly lost for about 40 minutes. This temporary blackout is expected during such missions, as the Moon blocks radio signals between the spacecraft and Earth.

The astronauts were able to observe the far side of the Moon, a region rarely seen by humans. They captured detailed images of the lunar surface and studied craters and geological features. The mission also provided a unique view of a solar eclipse from space, offering valuable data for scientific research.

The Artemis II mission is designed as a test flight to prepare for future missions that will land astronauts on the Moon. It is part of a broader plan by NASA to establish a long term human presence on the Moon and eventually send astronauts to Mars.

With the successful completion of this lunar flyby, the Artemis programme has taken a significant step forward, opening a new chapter in human exploration beyond Earth.
