Trafigura signs gold deal to support Ghana mine restart

Accra: Global commodities trader Trafigura has signed a major agreement to buy gold from a mine in Ghana, while also providing financial support to help restart its operations.

The deal is with Heath Goldfields Ltd, which owns the Bogoso Prestea mine. Under the agreement, Trafigura will purchase about 700,000 ounces of gold from the mine in the coming years.

At the same time, the company is offering 65 million dollars in debt financing. This funding is expected to help stabilize operations and support the mine’s recovery after it remained closed for nearly two years.

Gold production at the mine resumed in February this year, marking an important step for Ghana’s mining sector. The restart has already created jobs and brought renewed activity to the area.

This is Trafigura’s first gold agreement in Ghana and one of its few such deals in Africa. The move shows growing interest from global traders in securing gold supplies from the continent, especially at a time when demand for gold remains strong worldwide.

The agreement also reflects a common model in the mining industry where companies provide funding in exchange for future production. While this helps mining firms restart operations, it also means a large share of future output is already committed to the buyer.

Ghana is one of Africa’s leading gold producers, and the revival of the Bogoso Prestea mine is seen as a positive sign for the country’s economy. However, some analysts say such deals could limit future earnings if gold prices rise further, since production is tied to pre agreed terms.

Despite these concerns, the agreement is expected to bring much needed investment and stability to the mine, while strengthening Ghana’s position in the global gold market.
