Canada and Germany AI firms in merger talks to build strong global player

Berlin: Two fast growing artificial intelligence companies, Cohere and Aleph Alpha, are in advanced talks to merge, according to a report by Handelsblatt cited by Reuters.

The discussions, which began earlier this year, have now reached a serious stage. If the deal goes through, the combined company is expected to operate with dual headquarters in Canada and Germany, bringing together strengths from both sides of the Atlantic.

The possible merger is drawing attention in Europe, especially from the German government. Officials see the move as an important step in building strong and independent artificial intelligence systems. Germany is also expected to become a major customer of the merged company, using its technology to support digital public services.

German Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger said the merger would send a strong signal to the global market, showing that Europe is serious about developing its own AI capabilities.

Cohere is known for its enterprise focused AI models and multilingual systems, while Aleph Alpha has built a reputation for secure and reliable AI tools designed with European data protection standards in mind. Together, the two companies could offer powerful solutions for governments and businesses that want more control over their data.

The talks come at a time when many countries are trying to reduce dependence on major US technology companies and build what is often called sovereign AI. By joining forces, the two firms could create a strong alternative in the global AI race.

Cohere has grown rapidly in recent years and is valued at several billion dollars. Reports suggest it may also be preparing for a public listing in the near future, and a merger could strengthen its position further.

However, the deal is not yet confirmed. Aleph Alpha has said it regularly holds discussions with partners, while Cohere has not made any official comment on the reported talks.

Even so, the potential merger highlights a bigger shift in the technology world, where artificial intelligence is becoming not just a business tool but a key part of national strategy.
