Pope Leo XIV visits Annaba and follows the path of Saint Augustine

Annaba: On the second day of his visit to Algeria, Pope Leo XIV travelled to the coastal city of Annaba, reflecting on the legacy of Saint Augustine and encouraging faith and peace among believers.

Pope flew from Algiers to Annaba in the morning to visit the ancient site of Hippo, where Saint Augustine served as bishop for more than three decades until he died in 430. During his visit, he planted an olive tree near the ruins as a sign of peace and hope.

Later, Pope visited a care home run by the Little Sisters of the Poor, where he met elderly residents and staff. In his message, he spoke about the suffering caused by war, violence and injustice, and reminded those present that God stands with the humble and the suffering. The visit was marked by a calm and personal atmosphere as many had the chance to greet him.

He also held a private meeting and shared a meal with fellow Augustinians before concluding the day with Holy Mass at the Basilica of Saint Augustine.

The Mass drew a large and diverse gathering of pilgrims, clergy and faithful from different parts of the world, including Africa and beyond. Many saw the celebration as a powerful moment of unity and encouragement for the small Christian community in the country.

In his homily, the Pope urged Christians to renew their lives through faith, drawing inspiration from Saint Augustine. He reminded them that it is never too late to turn to God and begin again, and encouraged them to witness to the Gospel through simple acts of love and daily dialogue with others.

The visit to Annaba highlighted both the historical roots of Christianity in the region and the continuing presence of a faithful community living in hope and dialogue within a Muslim majority society.
