Hungary’s new leader moves to secure fuel supply with urgent talks

Budapest: Hungary’s incoming prime minister Péter Magyar has announced that he will hold urgent talks with the leadership of MOL Group to ensure steady fuel supplies as the country enters a period of political transition.

Magyar said his priority is to avoid any disruption in fuel availability for people and businesses. The discussions come at a time when Hungary is facing pressure on its energy system due to global tensions and supply uncertainties in Europe.

The country has recently seen its fuel reserves fall below the level required by the European Union. Although reserves have been partially restored, they remain lower than usual, raising concerns about how long supplies can be maintained if disruptions continue.

The outgoing government led by Viktor Orbán had already taken emergency steps to manage the situation. These included limiting fuel exports, introducing price controls and releasing strategic reserves to stabilise the market.

MOL Group, which plays a key role in Hungary’s energy sector, has said that crude oil supply through the Adriatic pipeline is continuing without interruption. The company has also expanded its sources of oil, bringing in supplies from several countries to reduce dependence on a single route.

However, challenges remain. A recent fire at one of its refineries has reduced production capacity, adding further pressure to the system at a time when demand remains high.

Magyar’s move to begin talks even before fully taking office shows the urgency of the situation. He has stressed that both the outgoing and incoming administrations must work together to ensure that fuel supplies remain stable during the transition.

The situation in Hungary reflects a wider issue across Europe, where countries are trying to balance energy security with changing political and economic conditions. For now, Hungary’s immediate focus remains clear, keeping fuel flowing and avoiding shortages for its people.
