Eight Keralite Teachers Killed as Mini Van Plunges Off Valparai Ghat Road

Coimbatore: A devastating road accident on the treacherous hill roads of Valparai in Tamil Nadu claimed the lives of eight people from Kerala on Friday, sending shockwaves across the state. The victims, most of them school teachers from Malappuram district, were travelling in a minivan that lost control and plunged down a steep stretch of the ghat road.

According to preliminary reports, the vehicle was carrying around 16 passengers, including teachers and a few children, who were returning from a leisure trip to Pollachi when the tragedy occurred at around 4 pm. The accident took place near the notoriously dangerous 13th hairpin bend, a section known for sharp curves and difficult driving conditions.

Officials said the driver appears to have lost control while negotiating the curve, causing the minivan to crash into the roadside barrier before overturning and plunging down towards a lower bend. The vehicle reportedly tumbled from the 13th to the 11th hairpin bend, resulting in catastrophic damage.

Rescue teams rushed to the spot and carried out emergency operations in the rugged terrain. Several injured passengers were pulled out of the wreckage and transported to hospitals in Pollachi for urgent medical treatment. However, eight occupants succumbed to their injuries, many of them dying on the spot due to the severity of the impact.

The victims are believed to be part of a group of teachers from a school in Malappuram who had embarked on a recreational outing. The incident has left the educational community and their hometown in deep mourning, with authorities working to confirm identities and inform families.

This tragic accident once again highlights the dangers associated with hill travel, especially on winding ghat roads like those in Valparai. Narrow lanes, sharp hairpin bends, and unpredictable terrain make such routes particularly hazardous, demanding extreme caution from drivers.

Local authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash, including whether mechanical failure or human error contributed to the disaster. Meanwhile, calls are growing for stricter safety measures and better monitoring on high-risk mountain roads to prevent such recurring tragedies.
