Turkey warns US pullback from Europe could weaken security

Ankara: Turkey has warned that any reduction of the United States role in Europe’s security system could have serious consequences if not handled carefully. Hakan Fidan said even a partial withdrawal could be damaging and disrupt the balance that has kept the region stable for decades.

Speaking at a time of growing tensions within NATO, Fidan said discussions are already under way among allies on how to manage the possible impact of reduced US involvement. He stressed that such a shift should be carefully planned to avoid weakening collective defence.

The warning comes as disagreements deepen between Washington and some European members over security priorities. Differences have been especially visible in relation to tensions in the Middle East, including the situation around the Strait of Hormuz, where some European countries have been reluctant to support US military actions.

There are also concerns about the future direction of US policy under Donald J. Trump, who has previously questioned the level of American commitment to NATO and has raised the possibility of reducing troop presence in Europe.

Turkey has called for a renewed dialogue within NATO to address these challenges. Officials say an upcoming summit is expected to focus on rebuilding trust between allies and preparing for a future where Europe may need to take on greater responsibility for its own defence.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has acknowledged that tensions exist but said cooperation continues and many allies remain committed to working with the United States.

Experts say that a reduced US role could leave gaps in areas such as intelligence sharing, rapid military response and nuclear deterrence. This has led to increasing discussions within Europe about strengthening its own defence capabilities.

Turkey has urged allies to act together and avoid divisions, warning that any fragmentation within NATO could weaken the alliance at a time of rising global uncertainty.
