Pope calls for reconciliation and harmony in Angola

Luanda: Pope Leo XIV has urged the Church in Angola to help build a society rooted in peace, fairness, and reconciliation, highlighting the importance of education, unity, and faith in shaping the nation’s future.

Speaking at the parish of Our Lady of Fatima in Luanda, the Pope met with bishops, clergy, religious men and women, catechists, and pastoral workers. He praised the Angolan Church for its courage in standing against the suffering caused by war and for working to rebuild communities affected by conflict.

Pope said the Church must continue to promote what he described as a reconciled memory. He explained that this means helping people move beyond past wounds by encouraging forgiveness, mutual understanding, and peaceful coexistence. He called on Church leaders to educate communities in harmony and to support those who have suffered but chosen the path of forgiveness.

During his address, he emphasized that the Church in Angola should remain missionary, active, and open to all. He acknowledged its efforts in promoting unity among Christians and engaging in dialogue with other religious communities, including Muslims.

Pope also underlined the key role of catechists, especially in Africa, describing their work as essential in passing on the faith and guiding communities. He encouraged young people not to fear dedicating their lives to Christ and reassured them that faith brings purpose and hope for the future.

He warned against misleading teachings that can distort the Gospel and called for stronger formation rooted in truth, personal discipline, and spiritual growth. He added that formation should not only be intellectual but also focus on inner life and responsibility.

Pope urged Church members to remain close to the people, especially the poor, and to avoid pride and the pursuit of privilege. He stressed that the Church must always serve others with humility and love.

Concluding his message, he encouraged Angolans to continue proclaiming peace and to strengthen fraternity within their communities. He said their past efforts in overcoming war should inspire a renewed commitment to building a just and united society.
