Death toll reaches 14 after explosion at fireworks unit in Thrissur

Thrissur: A powerful explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Thrissur has claimed at least 14 lives, with several others fighting for their lives in hospital, as rescue efforts continue late into the day.

The blast occurred in Mundathikode area on Tuesday afternoon when workers were reportedly preparing fireworks for the upcoming Thrissur Pooram. Witnesses said multiple explosions followed in quick succession, triggering a massive fire that spread rapidly across the unit.

Officials said more than 40 people were injured, many with severe burn injuries. At least five of them remain in critical condition and are receiving intensive care in nearby hospitals. Some victims are reported to have suffered extensive burns, making treatment more difficult.

Rescue teams, including fire and emergency services, rushed to the spot soon after the explosion. However, repeated blasts and intense heat slowed down their efforts. Local residents also joined in helping to move the injured to safety.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the explosion. Initial reports suggest possible safety lapses in the handling or storage of explosive materials. A detailed investigation has been ordered to find out what led to the incident and to fix responsibility.

The state government has assured full medical support for the injured and has directed officials to provide all necessary assistance to the affected families.

The incident has once again raised concerns about safety practices in fireworks units, especially during festival seasons when production is at its peak. Officials said inspections and safety checks will be reviewed in the coming days.

The situation remains serious as doctors continue to monitor those critically injured, and the death toll may rise further.
