Xpeng plans flying car deliveries by 2027 as it expands global ambitions

Beijing: Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng has said it expects to begin full scale deliveries of its flying cars by 2027, marking a major step in its push into future mobility and advanced technology.

The company said it has already received more than 7,000 pre orders, mostly from customers in China. These vehicles are designed to operate both on roads and in the air, offering a new form of transport that combines driving and low altitude flight.

Xpeng is working through regulatory approvals with aviation authorities, which remain one of the biggest challenges before commercial rollout. The company has been testing prototypes through its AeroHT division and aims to begin production in the coming years, starting with limited numbers before expanding.

The flying car project is part of a wider strategy that goes beyond electric vehicles. Xpeng is also developing humanoid robots and expects to begin mass production of these machines by late 2026. It is also testing robotaxi services in Chinese cities, with plans to expand globally by 2027.

Company leaders believe that robotics could become a major source of revenue in the long term, possibly even surpassing its core car business over the next decade.

Xpeng is also increasing its presence overseas. It currently operates in around 60 countries, with international markets contributing about 10 percent of its sales and 15 percent of revenue. The company expects overseas income to grow to more than half of its total revenue within the next five to ten years.

The company has also strengthened partnerships with global automakers, including cooperation with Volkswagen, as it looks to expand its technology and reach.

Despite strong progress, challenges remain. Industry experts point to strict regulations, high costs, and the need for new infrastructure as key hurdles. Public acceptance will also play an important role as the technology moves closer to everyday use.

Xpeng’s announcement reflects a growing race among global companies to lead in next generation transport, as the idea of flying cars moves closer from concept to reality.
