Pope Leo ends Africa visit with message of hope as youth dance in rain in Bata

Bata: The final full day of Pope Leo XIV’s Apostolic Journey across Africa ended with a powerful and joyful scene in Bata, where thousands of young people danced in heavy rain as they waited to see him.

A large crowd gathered at a football stadium in Bata, the country’s largest city, for a meeting with youth and families. As a tropical downpour began, many stayed in the open, singing and dancing together. When Pope arrived, the atmosphere turned even more vibrant, with loud cheers and cultural performances filling the stadium.

In his address, Pope praised the energy and faith of the young people, telling them that the brightest light is seen in their smiles and actions. He encouraged them to live in harmony and to find joy in giving to others.

Earlier in the day, Pope visited a prison in Bata, where rain had already begun falling. Calling the rain a sign of God’s blessing, he spoke to inmates about dignity and hope. He reminded them that no one is excluded from God’s love and that every person remains valuable despite their past mistakes.

Human rights groups have raised concerns about conditions in the prison, where inmates stood in rows wearing uniforms that reflected their crimes. Despite this, Pope’s message focused on compassion and the possibility of renewal.

Before arriving in Bata, Pope travelled to Mongomo near the border with Gabon. There he celebrated Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, one of Africa’s largest Catholic churches. Tens of thousands gathered to welcome him, with fireworks lighting up the sky.

In his homily, Pope spoke about the country’s natural wealth and the need to ensure it benefits all people. He said there is a strong desire for a hopeful future in Equatorial Guinea, and urged citizens to work together to build that future with faith and responsibility.

The day closed with scenes of unity and joy in Bata, as young people celebrated their faith despite the rain, marking a memorable end to Pope’s visit.
