Asansol: The Diocese of Asansol reaffirmed its pastoral direction and long-term priorities during its annual priests’ gathering held from April 20 to 22 at the historic Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. The three-day meeting brought together 44 priests alongside Archbishop Elias Frank, creating a platform for reflection, evaluation, and renewed planning for the diocese’s mission.
A major portion of the assembly was dedicated to reviewing the pastoral journey of the past year. Reports presented by various diocesan commissions and apostolic bodies provided a comprehensive picture of achievements, ongoing initiatives, and the challenges confronting the local Church. These discussions enabled clergy to critically assess their work while identifying areas that require deeper engagement.
Financial sustainability and accountability emerged as key concerns during the deliberations. Fr. Wilson Fernandes presented an extensive review of the diocese’s financial status over the past decade, drawing attention to the increasing constraints arising from evolving FCRA regulations. He emphasized the importance of responsible stewardship, transparency, and careful allocation of resources. Reinforcing this perspective, Archbishop Frank insisted that every financial decision must be guided by urgency, necessity, and authentic pastoral value.
The defining moment of the meeting came during a vision-oriented session led by Fr. Cletus D'Souza, who called on the clergy to adopt a mission rooted in clarity of purpose and foresight. Stressing that “vision must come before mission,” he challenged priests to anchor their ministry in a strong and forward-looking vision.
Drawing inspiration from futurist Frederick Polak, he highlighted that transformative success is always preceded by a compelling vision, even in contexts of limited resources. He further noted that while vision without action remains incomplete, and action without direction lacks meaning, a combination of both has the power to bring real change.
Fr. Cletus also advocated for a more inclusive and participatory Church, encouraging priests to engage closely with communities rather than functioning in isolation. His analysis of diocesan trends between 2023 and 2025 pointed to encouraging growth and expanding missionary opportunities, while also underlining the need to strengthen catechetical formation, youth engagement, and outreach in underdeveloped parishes.
Interactive group discussions allowed priests to address critical pastoral concerns, including evangelization strategies, catechetical renewal, comprehensive marriage preparation, and innovative models for parish development. These exchanges were aimed at aligning grassroots initiatives with the broader diocesan vision.
In his concluding remarks, Archbishop Frank urged the clergy to move forward with renewed confidence and hope. While acknowledging the importance of learning from past experiences, he emphasized that the Church’s mission must remain firmly oriented toward the future.
The annual gathering not only deepened the sense of unity among the clergy but also rekindled their shared commitment to advancing the mission of the Asansol diocese amid evolving pastoral realities.
