Unity is the Strength of the Faithful, Says Mar Kallarangatt at Catholic Congress 108th Anniversary Gathering

Pala: Emphasising the power of unity within the Church, Mar Joseph Kallarangatt called on the faithful to stand together in the face of challenges, stating that collective strength can overcome any threat. He also cautioned against disrespecting consecrated leaders, noting that such actions weaken the spiritual fabric of the community.

The bishop was addressing a large gathering after inaugurating the 108th anniversary conference of the Catholic Congress, the official lay organisation of the Syro-Malabar Church. The event was held at the auditorium of St Joseph’s Church, Paika, with strong participation from across the region.

Highlighting the historic role of the Catholic Congress, Mar Kallarangatt described the organisation as the voice of the Church and a vital force in strengthening the community. He said that over the past century, the movement has made valuable contributions to both ecclesial life and society. Recalling its legacy, he noted that during times of crisis, the Catholic Congress has consistently stood firm in defense of the Church and its faithful.

He added that attempts to divide the community would ultimately fail, stressing that unity remains essential for the survival and growth of the Church. According to him, the Catholic Congress continues to play a key role in preserving unity and safeguarding the interests of the faithful.

The conference began with a spirited rally in which thousands of participants took part despite unfavorable weather conditions, reflecting the strong commitment of the members.

In his keynote address, Global President Rajeev Kochuparambil warned against efforts to create divisions within Church leadership and among believers. He said the strength of the Catholic Congress lies not in extremism or fragmentation, but in its commitment to fraternity, cooperation, and shared purpose.

Delivering the anniversary message, Diocesan Director George Varghese Njarakunnel said that those spreading misinformation against the organization are largely being ignored, as the movement remains focused on its mission and values.

The meeting was presided over by Diocesan President Emmanuel Nidhari and was attended by several prominent members and leaders, including Jose Vattukulam, Fr Jose Nellikkathe Ruvil, Fr Mathew Vazhakppara, General Convener Rajesh Parayil, Joy Kaniparambil, Adv Johnson Veethiangal, Payas Kavalammakal, Johnson Cheruvally, Sindhu Jaibu, Sabu Poondikulam, Tommy Kanneettumyalil, Benny Kinattukara, Jobin Puthiyadathu Chalil, Libby Thampi, Bella Sibi, George Maniangat, Johnny Kunnapalli, and Sebastian Kunnapalli, among others.

The gathering concluded with a renewed sense of unity, as speakers reiterated the importance of faith and collective responsibility in addressing the challenges facing the Church and society today.
