Seoul moves ahead with Google AI campus plan

Seoul: Google will build a new artificial intelligence campus in Seoul as part of a partnership with South Korea, according to the presidential office. The plan was confirmed after a meeting between President Lee Jae Myung and Demis Hassabis.

Officials said a memorandum of understanding has been signed between Google and the country’s science ministry to begin work on the project. The campus is expected to bring together researchers, engineers and startups to work on new AI technologies and strengthen cooperation between global and local talent.

The South Korean government sees the project as a major step in its effort to become one of the world’s leading powers in artificial intelligence. Authorities have been pushing to expand research, develop skilled workers and support responsible use of AI in different sectors.

The campus is also expected to include collaboration programs and training opportunities for young developers. Officials said they have asked Google to send experienced engineers from the United States to help guide the initial phase of the project and share expertise.

The move comes at a time when competition in artificial intelligence is growing worldwide. Major technology companies are expanding their investments as countries try to secure a strong position in the fast developing field.

South Korea has already attracted large scale technology investments in recent years, including plans for data centers and cloud infrastructure. The new Google campus is expected to add momentum to these efforts and help the country build a stronger AI ecosystem.

For Google, the project offers a chance to expand its presence in Asia and work more closely with local innovators. For South Korea, it marks another step toward becoming a global hub for advanced technology and research.
