Ghana convoy attack kills civilians as military repels gunmen in Upper East region

Accra: At least three civilians were killed when armed men attacked a military escorted convoy in northern Ghana, raising fresh concerns about security in the troubled Upper East Region.

The attack happened on April 27 in Binduri, near the town of Bawku, an area that has seen repeated violence in recent years. The convoy was carrying civilians under military protection when gunmen opened fire without warning.

Ghana’s armed forces responded quickly and engaged the attackers in a gun battle. The military said seven of the assailants were killed during the exchange, while ten suspects were arrested. Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the scene.

Officials said one person was injured in the attack and is receiving treatment. The identities of the attackers are still unknown, and investigations are ongoing.

Security sources say the violence is likely linked to long standing tensions in the Bawku area, where chieftaincy disputes and ethnic divisions have led to repeated clashes. The region has remained fragile despite increased military presence.

There are also growing concerns about the wider security situation in West Africa, as militant activity in neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso and Mali continues to spread. Authorities fear such threats could influence local conflicts.

Following the attack, security has been tightened in the area and patrols have been increased. The military has assured residents that it will continue to protect civilians and restore calm.

The incident highlights the challenges Ghana faces in keeping peace in its northern regions, where local disputes and regional instability are increasingly connected.
