Singapore: A leading Catholic healthcare institution in Singapore has significantly enhanced its medical capabilities with the inauguration of new surgical and critical care facilities, marking a major step forward in patient-centered treatment and advanced healthcare delivery.
Mount Alvernia Hospital, a not-for-profit medical institution, formally opened its expanded facilities at its Thomson Road campus in April, reinforcing its commitment to accessible, high-quality care. The development includes a newly established day surgery centre alongside a fully upgraded intensive care infrastructure, allowing the hospital to manage both routine and life-threatening medical conditions more effectively.
The newly launched day surgery centre is designed to streamline same-day medical procedures, particularly in specialties such as ophthalmology and minor surgeries. Equipped with four modern operating theatres scheduled to be activated in phases based on patient needs the facility also features a five-bed recovery area and a 16-bed day ward. The proximity of the recovery unit to the operating theatres ensures minimal patient movement while enabling close and continuous monitoring immediately after surgery.
Alongside surgical expansion, the hospital has significantly strengthened its critical care capabilities. The upgraded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU) have been integrated into a 16-room critical care complex, effectively doubling its previous capacity. This modernized unit is equipped to handle a wide spectrum of severe medical conditions, including acute respiratory failure, multi-organ complications, neurological emergencies, and high-risk post-operative cases requiring constant supervision.
Special attention has been given to infection control and patient safety within the new facilities. The inclusion of two negative-pressure isolation rooms allows for the safe treatment of patients with airborne infectious diseases, reducing the risk of transmission within the hospital environment. Each critical care room is designed to support bedside procedures, minimizing the need to transfer vulnerable patients, while centralized monitoring systems provide real-time clinical oversight.
Established in 1961 by the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood, Mount Alvernia Hospital remains the only not-for-profit private general hospital offering tertiary care services in Singapore. With a capacity of 353 beds and the support of a wide network of accredited specialists, the institution has built a reputation for blending medical excellence with compassionate care.
A distinctive feature of the hospital’s approach is the integration of pastoral care into its healthcare services, reflecting its Catholic identity. This ensures holistic support for patients and their families, addressing not only physical needs but also emotional and spiritual well-being, regardless of religious background.
True to its not-for-profit mission, the hospital reinvests its financial surpluses into infrastructure development, community outreach, and charitable initiatives, including support for Assisi Hospice and programs aimed at assisting underserved populations.
The inauguration ceremony coincided with the hospital’s 65th anniversary and was attended by Ong Ye Kung, along with senior hospital officials and members of the founding religious congregation. The milestone underscores not only the institution’s enduring legacy but also its forward-looking vision in responding to evolving healthcare demands.
