Pope recalls fallen journalists and calls for protection of press freedom

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has remembered journalists who have lost their lives due to wars and violence, calling attention to the dangers faced by media workers around the world. Speaking after the Regina Caeli prayer in Saint Peter’s Square on Sunday, the Pope marked World Press Freedom Day, observed each year on May 3.

Referring to the global event promoted by UNESCO, the Pope said that press freedom continues to face serious challenges in many parts of the world. He noted that violations of this freedom are sometimes clear and direct, while at other times they happen in more subtle ways that are harder to detect.

He urged people to remember journalists and reporters who have paid the ultimate price while carrying out their work. Many have died while covering conflicts, exposing wrongdoing, or reporting from dangerous regions. His message highlighted the human cost behind the news and the risks that come with defending truth and transparency.

World Press Freedom Day serves as a reminder of the importance of free and independent journalism. According to UNESCO, access to reliable information helps build trust in society, supports accountability, and encourages open dialogue. These elements are essential for peace, economic recovery, sustainable development, and the protection of human rights.

However, recent findings show that press freedom is under increasing pressure worldwide. UNESCO’s World Trends Report covering the period from 2022 to 2025 points to a sharp decline in media freedom. The report suggests that this decline is one of the most serious since 2012 and compares it to difficult periods in modern history such as the world wars and the Cold War.

The organization has also warned about new threats linked to technology. The spread of false information and the misuse of artificial intelligence by harmful actors are raising concerns about public trust and national security. These challenges are making it harder for people to distinguish between reliable news and misleading content.

Despite these concerns, UNESCO says that the situation can still be improved. World Press Freedom Day 2026 is seen as an important opportunity to renew commitment to protecting journalists and strengthening media independence. Events are being held around the world to promote these values.

A major international conference is taking place on May 4 in Lusaka, Zambia, under the theme Shaping a Future of Peace. The gathering includes discussions, workshops, and online sessions focused on the role of journalism in building peaceful societies.

World Press Freedom Day is also a moment to honor journalists who have died in the line of duty. Many of them worked in difficult and dangerous conditions to bring important stories to light. Their sacrifice continues to inspire efforts to defend freedom of expression.

After his remarks, Pope Leo XIV greeted several groups present in the square. Among them were members of Italy’s Meter Association, an organization that has worked for more than thirty years to protect minors from abuse. The Pope thanked them for their dedication and encouraged continued efforts to support victims and promote prevention through education.

The Pope’s message combined concern for the safety of journalists with a broader call to uphold truth, dignity, and responsibility in communication. His words served as a reminder that a free press is not only a right but also a vital part of a just and peaceful society.
