Care for the poor is demanding yet essential to Christian life Pope Leo XIV says

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has said that serving the poor can be challenging, but stressed that it remains a fundamental part of living a true Christian life.

Pope shared this message during a meeting with leaders of Catholic Charities USA, which is part of the global humanitarian network Caritas Internationalis.

In his address, Pope Leo spoke openly about the realities faced by those engaged in charitable work. He noted that helping the poor often comes with practical and emotional difficulties, including limited resources, growing needs, and the pain of not always being able to provide enough support.

Despite these struggles, he encouraged the organisation to remain strong in its mission. He reminded them that their work is not just social service but a direct expression of Christian faith and love.

Pope said that moments of difficulty should not lead to discouragement. Instead, he urged those present to trust in the constant presence of Christ, who walks with them in their efforts to serve others.

His remarks come at a time when some Catholic outreach programmes in the United States are facing uncertainty. Recently, funding was withdrawn from a long standing initiative of the Archdiocese of Miami that had supported unaccompanied children for many years. The programme had helped provide shelter and reunite children with their families, making a significant impact over decades.

Pope Leo acknowledged that such developments can make charitable work even more demanding. However, he praised Catholic Charities USA for continuing its efforts to support vulnerable communities across the country.

He said the organisation plays a vital role in addressing human suffering, helping families in crisis, and offering practical assistance to those facing hardship. Through these actions, he noted, the Church continues the compassionate mission of Christ.

With more than 170 agencies, Catholic Charities USA remains one of the largest providers of social services in the United States, reaching millions of people each year.

Reflecting on the spiritual meaning of charity, Pope said that caring for others is the clearest sign of genuine love for God. He encouraged those involved in charitable work to go beyond material aid and show kindness, respect, and heartfelt compassion.

He also reminded them that in serving the poor, they are encountering Christ himself. This encounter, he said, brings dignity and hope to both those who give and those who receive.

In his concluding words, Pope Leo pointed to the hope that comes from the Resurrection. He encouraged the organisation to remain guided by this hope, trusting that even in difficult times, renewal and new life are possible.

He ended by assuring them of his prayers and appreciation for their continued commitment to those in need.
