Chennai: Vijay is set to become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar reportedly cleared the way for the formation of a new government led by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party.
The political developments came after days of uncertainty following the Assembly election results that produced a hung verdict. Vijay’s party emerged as the single largest party in the state Assembly but remained short of the majority mark needed to form the government on its own. Since the election results were announced, intense discussions and negotiations have been taking place in Chennai among political parties and independent legislators.
According to reports from Indian media outlets, Vijay submitted letters of support from alliance partners and independent MLAs to the Governor at Raj Bhavan. After examining the documents and holding consultations, the Governor is understood to have accepted Vijay’s claim that he has enough support to form the government.
Sources close to the developments said preparations for the swearing in ceremony are now underway and an official announcement is expected soon. Security arrangements have reportedly been increased around important government locations in Chennai as supporters of TVK gathered to celebrate the latest political breakthrough.
The Congress party has openly extended support to Vijay’s government formation efforts. Senior Congress leaders met Vijay and assured him that their legislators would back the new administration in the Assembly. Political observers believe this support played a key role in strengthening Vijay’s position before the Governor.
Several smaller regional parties and independent MLAs are also expected to support the new coalition either from inside the government or from outside. Though the exact numbers have not yet been officially released, reports indicate that TVK has crossed the majority mark with the help of these additional supporters.
At the same time, the opposition AIADMK has clearly stated that it will not support Vijay’s government. Party leaders said they would sit in the opposition benches and closely monitor the functioning of the new administration. The DMK has also criticised some of the post election political negotiations, though the party has not announced any major protest plans so far.
The rapid rise of Vijay in Tamil Nadu politics has surprised many political analysts across India. Only a short time ago, he was known mainly as one of the biggest stars in the Tamil film industry. However, his decision to enter politics and launch Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam attracted strong support from young voters and first time voters across the state.
Many supporters see Vijay as a fresh alternative to the long standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu politics. Large crowds gathered outside TVK offices after reports emerged that the Governor had accepted Vijay’s claim to form the government. Party workers distributed sweets and celebrated across several districts.
Industrial groups and business leaders are also closely watching the developments because Tamil Nadu is one of India’s leading manufacturing and technology centres. Investors are hoping that the new government will provide political stability and continue development projects without interruption.
Political experts believe the next few days will be crucial for Vijay as he prepares to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly. If successful, his swearing in as Chief Minister would mark one of the most dramatic political transitions in recent Tamil Nadu history.
