Rise in anti Christian attacks reported in Israel during past year

Jerusalem: A new report has revealed a worrying rise in attacks and acts of hostility against Christians and Christian institutions in Israel during the past year. According to the Religious Freedom Data Center, a total of 181 anti Christian incidents were recorded across the Holy Land, raising fresh concerns about religious freedom and the safety of Christian communities.

The report states that the largest number of incidents involved people spitting at Christians or Christian symbols in public places. Such acts accounted for nearly 60 percent of all recorded cases, with 109 incidents documented. Many Christian leaders have repeatedly described this behaviour as deeply insulting and painful, especially in sacred areas visited by pilgrims from around the world.

The report also noted that verbal abuse, threats, shouting, and harassment made up around 18 percent of the attacks. In total, 32 such incidents were recorded. Christians, including clergy and worshippers, reportedly faced insults and intimidation in different parts of the country.

Another serious concern highlighted in the report was the damage caused to Christian property and religious symbols. About 12 percent of the documented cases involved vandalism and destruction targeting churches, crosses, statues, cemeteries, or other Christian signs. Twenty two incidents of this kind were officially recorded.

The data also pointed to cases involving physical violence. Nine incidents of direct physical attacks against Christians were reported during the year. In addition, six cases related to the desecration of holy places and disrespectful behaviour at sacred sites were documented.

The Religious Freedom Data Center further recorded three cases of online incitement targeting Christians. Though smaller in number, the organisation warned that hateful content shared through digital platforms can contribute to growing intolerance and hostility in society.

The report stressed that the real number of anti Christian incidents could be much higher than the official figures. According to the organisation, many victims may choose not to report incidents due to fear, lack of confidence, or the belief that no action will be taken.

Christian communities in the Holy Land have in recent years expressed increasing concern over acts of intimidation and discrimination. Church leaders have repeatedly called on authorities to ensure stronger protection for places of worship, clergy, local believers, and pilgrims visiting the region.

The findings of the report come at a time when religious tensions and political uncertainty continue to affect daily life in the region. Christian representatives have urged greater respect for religious diversity and peaceful coexistence in the land considered sacred by Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike.
