Chennai: Vijay has moved a step closer to forming the next government in Tamil Nadu after receiving support from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Indian Union Muslim League following the recently concluded Assembly election.
The dramatic political developments unfolded after the election produced a hung Assembly, with Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerging as the single largest party but falling short of the majority mark needed to form the government on its own. Over the past few days, political discussions and negotiations have continued in Chennai as parties explored possible alliances and support arrangements.
The biggest breakthrough for Vijay came when VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan announced unconditional support for TVK. Speaking to reporters, Thirumavalavan said the decision was taken in the interest of political stability in Tamil Nadu and to avoid uncertainty in the state. He also stressed the need for a stable administration at a time when people are expecting quick decisions from the new government.
Soon after the VCK announcement, the Indian Union Muslim League also extended support to Vijay’s party. With these developments, TVK reportedly crossed the majority mark in the 234 member Assembly. Political observers say the support has significantly strengthened Vijay’s position and improved his chances of becoming the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Reports indicate that Vijay is expected to meet Governor Rajendra Arlekar again very soon with letters of support from allied parties. The meeting is likely to play a crucial role in deciding the next stage of government formation in the state. Sources close to the discussions say the Governor had earlier asked Vijay to provide proof of majority support before formally inviting him to form the government.
The Congress party and Left parties including CPI and CPI(M) had already extended their backing to TVK earlier this week. However, some of these parties clarified that they would support the government from outside rather than becoming part of the Cabinet. Even so, their support has added important numbers to Vijay’s side.
The political rise of Vijay has become one of the most talked about developments in Tamil Nadu politics. For decades, the state has seen film stars successfully enter politics, but Vijay’s rapid journey from cinema to a possible Chief Ministership has drawn nationwide attention. He officially launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in 2024 and entered electoral politics with strong support from young voters and first time voters.
Throughout the election campaign, Vijay focused on issues such as unemployment, corruption, education, welfare measures and governance reforms. His public meetings attracted large crowds across the state, especially among youth and women supporters. Political analysts believe his popularity as an actor helped him connect emotionally with voters, while his campaign strategy gave his party wider political acceptance.
Meanwhile, discussions are continuing among alliance partners regarding the structure of the possible new government. Although there has been speculation about an oath taking ceremony in the coming days, there has been no official confirmation from Raj Bhavan.
Supporters of TVK gathered outside the party headquarters in Chennai celebrating the latest developments. Many waved party flags and raised slogans in support of Vijay, expressing hope that a new political chapter is about to begin in Tamil Nadu.
If the Governor officially invites Vijay to form the government after verifying the numbers, Tamil Nadu could soon witness one of the most significant political transitions in recent years.
