UDF begins crucial cabinet discussions after historic Kerala victory

Thiruvananthapuram: The UDF has begun intense discussions on cabinet formation after its sweeping victory in the Kerala Assembly election, with alliance partners negotiating ministerial positions and key portfolios ahead of the swearing in of the new government.

The talks gained momentum after senior Congress leader V D Satheesan was officially chosen as the next Chief Minister of Kerala following days of political uncertainty and internal consultations within the alliance. The decision brought an end to widespread speculation over the leadership issue and shifted the focus toward the composition of the new cabinet.

The UDF returned to power with a massive mandate, winning 102 seats in the 140 member Assembly and ending a decade of Left Democratic Front rule in the state. Political observers say the scale of the victory has increased expectations among alliance partners regarding representation in the ministry.

Sources within the Congress said the party intends to retain control over several important departments including Home, Finance, Revenue, Energy, Forest and Tourism. Discussions are continuing over other major portfolios such as Health, Education, Industries, Local Self Government and Public Works.

The Indian Union Muslim League, one of the strongest partners in the UDF alliance, is expected to receive multiple cabinet positions. Senior IUML leaders have publicly supported the Congress decision to appoint Satheesan as Chief Minister and have indicated that the party is prepared for detailed discussions on ministerial allocation.

IUML state president Panakkad Sadikali Shihab Thangal said the alliance had respected democratic processes in arriving at the leadership decision. He added that the focus should now be on forming a stable and effective government capable of meeting public expectations.

Within the Congress itself, there are reports of differing opinions regarding certain portfolios. Some leaders are believed to be pushing for the party to retain departments like Education and Information Technology rather than handing them over to alliance partners. Senior leaders are holding consultations in both Thiruvananthapuram and New Delhi to arrive at a final consensus.

Other UDF allies have also stepped up their demands for cabinet representation following the election victory. Kerala Congress Joseph faction is reportedly seeking two ministerial positions after improving its performance in the polls. Smaller allies including the Revolutionary Socialist Party, Kerala Congress Jacob faction, CMP and RMP are also expected to seek either cabinet positions or other important roles in the new administration.

Political analysts say the cabinet formation process is being closely watched because the UDF is returning to power after ten years in opposition. Many believe the new government will face immediate pressure to demonstrate unity and administrative efficiency, especially after criticism over the delay in selecting the Chief Minister.

Public expectations are also high due to the scale of the electoral victory. Voters across Kerala have expressed hope that the new administration will focus on economic growth, job opportunities, infrastructure development and improvements in public services.

The Congress leadership is reportedly trying to balance regional representation, community interests and seniority while preparing the final cabinet list. Leaders are also keen to avoid internal dissatisfaction that could affect the stability of the government during its early months in office.

The swearing in ceremony of the new Kerala government is expected to take place in the coming days once final discussions on portfolios and ministerial appointments are completed. Senior UDF leaders have expressed confidence that the alliance will present a united front and begin its new term with a strong and coordinated leadership team.
