Cambridge honours former mayor Baiju Thittala for outstanding public service

Cambridge: Former Mayor of Cambridge and senior solicitor Baiju Thittala has been awarded the prestigious title of Honorary Councillor of Cambridge City in recognition of his long and dedicated public service to the city and its people.

The honour was conferred in appreciation of his more than eight years of service as a councillor and mayor, during which he contributed significantly to community development, civic welfare, and social harmony in Cambridge.

The recognition is being celebrated as a proud moment for the Malayali community and the wider Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom. Many community members described the honour as a reflection of the growing contribution of Indians in British public life and local governance.

During his time in public office, Baiju Thittala was known for his people centred approach and efforts to bring together residents from different cultural, social, and ethnic backgrounds. His leadership as Mayor was widely appreciated for promoting inclusiveness, strengthening community relationships, and supporting initiatives aimed at public welfare and civic engagement.

The title of Honorary Councillor is one of the distinguished civic recognitions granted by Cambridge City Council to former elected representatives who have shown exceptional dedication to public service. Former councillors become eligible for the honour after completing ten years of service, while former mayors qualify after serving for at least eight years.

According to the council process, nominations may be submitted either by former councillors themselves or by serving councillors on their behalf. Each nomination is carefully reviewed by the Civic Affairs Committee before being presented to the full Council for approval. The honour can only be granted with the support of at least two thirds of the Council members.

Those who receive the title are accorded special civic privileges and recognition within the city. Honorary councillors are invited to important civic functions alongside serving councillors and are also given reserved seating during Council meetings and official events. As a mark of respect, the flag above the historic Guildhall is traditionally flown at half mast upon the passing of an honorary councillor.

Friends, colleagues, and members of the community have congratulated Baiju Thittala on receiving the recognition, describing it as a well deserved honour for years of sincere and committed service.

The award is also seen as an inspiration for future generations interested in public service, demonstrating how dedication, integrity, and community focused leadership can make a lasting impact on society.
