D K Shivakumar takes oath as Karnataka Chief Minister amid major leadership transition

Bengaluru: Senior Congress leader D K Shivakumar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on Wednesday, marking a significant political transition in one of India's most important states. The swearing in ceremony, held in Bengaluru, was attended by top Congress leaders, party workers, government officials, and supporters from across the state.

The leadership change comes after months of speculation and discussions within the Congress party regarding the future of the Karnataka government. Shivakumar succeeds Siddaramaiah, who had been serving as Chief Minister since the Congress returned to power in the 2023 Assembly elections.

The ceremony was seen as a show of unity within the Congress party. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, and several national and state leaders were present to witness the occasion. Party leaders expressed confidence that the new administration would continue to focus on development, welfare programmes, and good governance.

D K Shivakumar is one of the most influential leaders in Karnataka politics. A veteran politician, he has represented the Kanakapura constituency multiple times and has held several important positions in the state government. He also played a major role in strengthening the Congress organisation in Karnataka and was widely credited for helping the party secure victory in the 2023 state elections.

Speaking after taking the oath of office, Shivakumar thanked the people of Karnataka and the Congress leadership for placing their trust in him. He promised to work for the welfare of all sections of society and said his government would focus on development, employment, education, agriculture, and infrastructure.

The new Chief Minister also emphasised the need for unity and cooperation among party members. He said the government would continue programmes aimed at improving the lives of ordinary citizens while addressing the challenges facing the state.

Along with Shivakumar, the first group of cabinet ministers also took the oath of office. Political observers noted that the cabinet formation reflected efforts by the Congress leadership to maintain regional, social, and political balance within the government. Additional ministers are expected to be inducted in the coming weeks as the cabinet expands.

Among those expected to find representation in the new ministry are two leaders of Malayali origin, highlighting the contribution of the Malayali community to Karnataka's political landscape. However, the complete list of ministers and portfolios is expected to be announced after further consultations within the party.

Meanwhile, outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to continue playing an important role in the Congress organisation. Party leaders have praised his contribution to the state and have sought to ensure a smooth transition of power.

The Karnataka government also made special arrangements for the swearing in ceremony, with large crowds gathering in and around the venue. Security was tightened across Bengaluru as thousands of supporters arrived to witness the historic event.

Political analysts believe the leadership change represents a new chapter for the Congress government in Karnataka. The coming months will be closely watched as the new Chief Minister begins implementing his vision for the state and works to fulfil the promises made to voters.

With D K Shivakumar now at the helm, Karnataka enters a new phase of governance, carrying expectations of stability, development, and continued political cooperation within the ruling Congress party.
