Pope Leo XIV urges Spain’s lawmakers to defend life, freedom and peace

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV made history on Monday by becoming the first Pope to address Spain’s Parliament, delivering a strong message on the dignity of human life, the importance of family, the protection of religious freedom, and the urgent need to work for peace in a world marked by conflict and division.

Speaking before members of the Congress of Deputies in Madrid, the Pope said that every truly democratic society must be built upon the recognition of the inherent dignity of every human person. He stressed that human dignity is not granted by governments or public opinion but is a fundamental reality that must always be respected and protected.

A major focus of his address was the protection of human life. Pope Leo said that every human life deserves recognition and care from conception until natural death. He warned that when societies fail to protect the unborn, the elderly, the sick, and other vulnerable people, they risk losing sight of their moral foundations. According to the Pope, safeguarding life is not simply a religious concern but a goal that serves the whole of civilization.

The Pope also highlighted the importance of the family, describing it as the first and most important community in which people learn values such as love, service, forgiveness, and responsibility. He said that strong families contribute to the social and spiritual stability of nations and play a key role in shaping future generations. Educational institutions, he added, also have an important responsibility in helping young people seek truth and respect the dignity of others.

Addressing the issue of migration, Pope Leo acknowledged the suffering of millions of people who are forced to leave their homes in search of safety and a better future. He called migration one of the major moral challenges of the modern world and urged governments to place people at the center of their policies. While advocating safe and legal pathways for migrants and refugees, he also emphasized the importance of creating conditions that allow people to remain in their own countries with dignity and security.

The Holy Father also expressed concern about growing social divisions, violence, and distrust in many parts of the world. He described peace as both a political goal and a moral necessity. According to the Pope, lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue, justice, respect for international law, and a commitment to reconciliation. He warned against the growing trend of military rearmament and stated that every war ultimately represents a painful failure of humanity’s ability to negotiate and resolve disputes peacefully.

Reflecting on advances in technology, Pope Leo raised concerns about the use of artificial intelligence in military operations. He insisted that decisions involving life and death should never be left entirely to automated systems and called for strict ethical oversight of emerging technologies.

Another significant part of the speech focused on freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. The Pope described these freedoms as essential pillars of any democratic society. He argued that authentic freedom allows individuals to seek and embrace what is good and that governments should respect and protect the religious convictions of their citizens. He also defended the confidentiality of the sacrament of confession, describing it as an important aspect of religious freedom and personal conscience.

Concluding his address, Pope Leo reminded lawmakers that every political decision affects real people and carries a moral responsibility. He encouraged Spain to remain a nation known for solidarity, culture, hope, and dialogue. Offering prayers for peace, justice, and prosperity, he asked God to bless Spain and all nations of the world.

The historic speech was warmly received, with members of Parliament responding with more than seven minutes of applause, marking a memorable moment in the relationship between the Catholic Church and Spain’s democratic institutions.
