Free travel scheme for women on KSRTC buses moves closer to launch

Thiruvanthapuram: The Kerala government's much anticipated free travel scheme for women on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses is moving closer to implementation, with indications that the benefit will initially be available only on ordinary bus services.

The scheme was one of the major promises made by the United Democratic Front government during the recent Assembly election campaign. Soon after assuming office, the new Cabinet approved the proposal, announcing that women would be allowed to travel free on KSRTC buses from June 15.

As the launch date approaches, government officials and transport authorities are working to finalise the programme's operational details. Recent discussions suggest that the free travel facility is likely to be restricted to ordinary KSRTC services during the first phase. Premium services like superfast and deluxe may not be available immediately.

Officials say the decision is aimed at ensuring that the scheme remains financially manageable while providing relief to a large section of daily commuters. The government is studying various options to balance public welfare and the financial health of KSRTC, which has faced economic challenges for many years.

The free travel initiative is expected to benefit thousands of women who rely on public transport for work, education, healthcare and other daily activities. Many passengers have welcomed the announcement, saying it could significantly reduce household transportation expenses and encourage greater use of public transport.

Transport authorities have already begun preparations for the rollout. One important step has been the introduction of a gender based ticketing system across KSRTC services. Conductors are now recording whether passengers are male, female, children or transgender while issuing tickets. The information collected will help officials understand travel patterns and estimate the amount of financial support required to implement the free travel programme.

Government sources indicate that the data gathered through this exercise will play a key role in determining the long term structure of the scheme. Authorities are also assessing whether additional categories of buses can be brought under the programme in the future.

The proposal has, however, generated concern among private bus operators. Representatives of the private bus sector have argued that free travel on government operated buses could lead to a shift in passenger numbers away from private services. They fear that such a change may affect their earnings and create further challenges for operators already facing rising operational costs.

Despite these concerns, the state government has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the scheme as promised. Ministers have stated that the welfare measure is intended to improve mobility for women and provide direct financial relief to families.

Financial experts estimate that the programme could require substantial government support each month. As a result, discussions are continuing how the state will compensate KSRTC for revenue losses resulting from the free travel facility.

With only a few days remaining before the proposed launch date, commuters across Kerala are awaiting the final guidelines from the government. While some operational details are still being worked out, the free travel initiative is expected to become one of the most significant public welfare measures introduced by the new administration.

If implemented as planned, the scheme could transform daily travel for thousands of women across the state and mark a major step in Kerala's efforts to make public transportation more accessible and affordable.
