New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff, marking a significant leadership transition in the country's armed forces. The appointment was announced on Friday, with Lt Gen Seth set to take charge on June 30, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who is due to retire after completing his tenure.
Lt Gen Seth currently serves as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff and is widely regarded as one of the Indian Army's most experienced officers. His appointment comes at a time when India continues to focus on strengthening national security, modernising its military capabilities, and enhancing preparedness along its borders.
The government said the appointment had been approved by the President of India and would take effect from the afternoon of June 30. Defence experts have described the decision as a natural progression, given Lt Gen Seth's long service record and extensive experience in both operational and strategic roles.
Commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986, Lt Gen Seth has served the Indian Army for nearly four decades. Throughout his career, he has held several key command and staff appointments across different regions of the country. His experience spans conventional military operations, counter insurgency missions, strategic planning, and force development.
Among the important positions he has held are the command of an armoured regiment in the desert sector and an armoured brigade in the western theatre. He also led a counter insurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir, where he gained valuable experience in dealing with complex security challenges.
Lt Gen Seth later commanded the prestigious XXI Corps, also known as the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the Indian Army's principal strike formations. He subsequently served as General Officer Commanding of Delhi Area before taking on higher leadership responsibilities as Army Commander of the South Western Command and later the Southern Command.
On April 1, 2026, he assumed office as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, one of the highest positions in the military hierarchy. In that role, he played an important part in overseeing operational readiness, capability enhancement programmes, and long term planning for the Army.
Military observers note that Lt Gen Seth brings a balanced mix of field experience and strategic leadership to his new role. His background in armoured warfare, large scale military operations, and organisational management is expected to help guide the Army through a period of rapid technological change and evolving security challenges.
India's armed forces have been undertaking major modernisation efforts in recent years, including the integration of advanced technologies, improved surveillance systems, and enhanced coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Defence analysts believe Lt Gen Seth's leadership will be important in continuing these initiatives while maintaining operational preparedness.
