New Delhi: United States President Donald Trump is expected to visit India early next year, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in what could become one of the most important diplomatic meetings between the two countries during Trump's second term in office. Although no official date has been announced, Rubio said preparations are already under way and expressed confidence that the visit will take place.
Speaking in an interview with Indian news agency IANS, Rubio said the Trump administration is working towards arranging the visit and described India as one of America's closest strategic partners. He also praised the strong personal relationship between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying it continues to play an important role in strengthening ties between the two nations.
Rubio added that he is also planning to visit India later this year to help prepare for the presidential trip. His remarks suggest that both governments are actively working behind the scenes to organise a high level visit that could further deepen cooperation across several key sectors.
The expected visit comes at a time when India and the United States are making significant progress in negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement. Officials from both countries have held several rounds of talks in recent months, with negotiators now aiming to finalise an interim agreement before temporary tariff arrangements expire.
The proposed trade deal is expected to cover a wide range of areas, including tariffs, market access, investment, energy, defence cooperation, digital technology and supply chain resilience. Officials on both sides have described the discussions as constructive, while indicating that important issues still need to be resolved before an agreement can be formally announced.
Reports from several major Indian news organisations have echoed Rubio's comments about the proposed visit. The Indian Express reported that US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also confirmed that preparations for Trump's visit have begun. According to the report, Gor described the relationship between Trump and Modi as a key factor behind expanding cooperation in trade, defence, technology and energy.
The Times of India also reported that the US administration is actively planning the visit and views India as one of Washington's closest international partners. The newspaper said both governments are working to strengthen economic and strategic cooperation ahead of the proposed visit.
The announcement follows recent diplomatic engagements between Trump and Modi. Earlier this month, the two leaders met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, where they discussed trade negotiations, regional security and broader strategic cooperation. Following the meeting, Trump said he expected to visit India sometime in the future, raising expectations that a formal visit could be arranged after the trade agreement reaches an advanced stage.
Relations between India and the United States have remained strong despite occasional disagreements over tariffs, trade policies and India's purchases of Russian oil. Both governments have continued to emphasise the importance of their strategic partnership, particularly in the Indo Pacific region, where they share concerns about regional security and stability.
Analysts believe Trump's proposed visit could provide an opportunity for both countries to announce major agreements in trade, defence, energy and emerging technologies. Discussions are also expected to focus on expanding investment, strengthening semiconductor cooperation and improving supply chain security.
The visit may also include discussions on regional and global issues, including cooperation through the Quad grouping, although no official programme has been announced. Whether a Quad leaders meeting will coincide with Trump's visit remains uncertain.
Despite Rubio's positive comments, officials have stressed that the visit has not yet been formally confirmed by the White House. No travel schedule or detailed itinerary has been released, and final plans are expected to depend partly on the successful conclusion of the ongoing trade negotiations and the schedules of both leaders.
Even so, Rubio's remarks have added fresh momentum to expectations that India and the United States are entering a new phase in their partnership. If the visit takes place as planned, it is likely to mark another significant milestone in the growing relationship between the world's two largest democracies and could pave the way for deeper cooperation across economic, strategic and technological sectors in the years ahead.
