Pope Leo XIV calls for respect and protection of every human life

Vatican City:  Pope Leo XIV has invited Catholics around the world to dedicate the month of July to prayer for respect for human life. In his monthly prayer intention, the Pope called on individuals, families and communities to recognize the unique value of every person and to protect human dignity throughout every stage of life.

The Pope shared his intention through the monthly Pray with the Pope video, prepared by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network. His message focuses on the belief that every human life is a sacred gift and that no person should be treated as unwanted, forgotten or without value.

In his prayer, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the Christian belief that every person is created by God in love and called to live life in its fullness. He said that each human being reflects the face of God from the first moment of existence until the final breath of earthly life.

The Pope prayed for the grace to recognize and protect the unique and unrepeatable value of every human being. His message placed special attention on people who are weak, vulnerable or unable to defend themselves.

Pope Leo XIV encouraged people to welcome life without conditions and to care with tenderness for those experiencing weakness and difficulty. He also called for every stage of human life to be accompanied with respect and for society to courageously defend those who have no voice.

The Pope’s prayer also addressed the problem of indifference and what the Church often describes as a culture of discard. He asked for forgiveness for the times when people fail to recognize the dignity of others or treat human beings as if their lives have less value because of their age, condition or circumstances.

He prayed for a renewed heart that is always ready to choose life and for generous hands willing to protect others through practical actions. The message suggests that respect for life should not remain only an idea or a statement of belief, but should be shown through daily choices, care and service.

Pope Leo XIV also prayed that the Church may become a living witness to the Gospel of life. He expressed the hope that Christian communities would become open and welcoming homes where every life is celebrated, no person feels unwanted and the dignity of every individual is respected and protected.

Concluding his prayer, the Pope asked Jesus to teach people to love life with tenderness, faithfulness and a willingness to give themselves for others. He called on Catholics to show through both words and actions that every human life has great value and deserves care and protection.

The monthly prayer intention is part of the work of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network. The initiative has its roots in the Apostleship of Prayer, which was founded in 1844. Today, it is a Pontifical Work entrusted to the Society of Jesus.

In December 2020, Pope Francis established the network as a Vatican Foundation, while its final statutes were approved in July 2024. The network is active in more than 92 countries and brings together a spiritual community of over 22 million people.

One of the central parts of its mission is promoting the Pope’s monthly prayer intentions. These intentions invite Catholics and other people of goodwill to pray and reflect on major challenges facing humanity and the mission of the Church.

For July, Pope Leo XIV’s message places human dignity at the center of prayer and action. His appeal asks believers not only to speak about the value of life but also to demonstrate respect through compassion, protection and practical care for others.

The prayer intention carries a simple message that every person has value and that society has a responsibility to protect human dignity. By asking Catholics to pray for respect for human life, Pope Leo XIV is also encouraging communities to examine how they treat the vulnerable, the forgotten and those who may feel that they have no place in society.

His July intention calls for a culture in which human life is welcomed, weakness is met with tenderness and dignity is protected from the beginning of life until its natural end.
