Ukraine rejects Russian claim of capturing key eastern city Kostiantynivka

Kyiv: Ukraine has rejected Russia’s claim that its forces have captured the strategically important eastern city of Kostiantynivka, as fighting continues across the Donetsk region. The conflicting statements from Moscow and Kyiv have created uncertainty over the actual situation on the ground, with independent confirmation of full Russian control still unavailable.

The Russian military announced that its forces had taken control of Kostiantynivka after months of heavy fighting in and around the city. Russia’s top military commander Valery Gerasimov presented the development as an important battlefield success. Moscow said control of the city would strengthen the position of Russian forces in eastern Ukraine and help them continue their advance towards other important Ukrainian held areas.

Ukraine strongly denied the Russian announcement. The Ukrainian General Staff said its forces were continuing to defend positions in Kostiantynivka and insisted that the city had not fallen. Ukrainian military officials said the situation remained difficult, with Russian troops continuing attacks in the area, but rejected the claim that Moscow had established complete control.

The dispute is difficult to verify because access to the frontline is limited and fighting continues in and around the urban area. Reports based on battlefield assessments suggest that Russian troops may have entered parts of Kostiantynivka and could be operating in small groups inside some areas. However, these reports do not confirm that Russia has taken full control of the entire city.

Kostiantynivka has major strategic importance in the battle for the Donetsk region. The city forms part of a wider defensive network that includes Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. These cities are among Ukraine’s most important remaining positions in the region.

If Russia establishes full control over Kostiantynivka and nearby transport routes, its forces could increase pressure on the remaining Ukrainian positions further north. Such a development could allow Moscow to move closer to its goal of controlling the entire Donetsk region. However, Ukrainian resistance in the area remains strong, and fighting for heavily defended urban areas has often continued for long periods during the war.

The latest dispute over Kostiantynivka comes as both countries continue major military operations far beyond the immediate frontline. Russia has carried out large attacks using missiles and drones against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Moscow has said some recent attacks were carried out in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory.

Ukraine has also continued long range attacks against targets inside Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed strikes against oil infrastructure near St Petersburg and attacks in the Kronstadt area. Ukraine has increasingly targeted oil facilities, military sites and other infrastructure that it says support Russia’s war effort.

The fighting in eastern Ukraine remains one of the most intense parts of the war. Russian forces have continued attempts to advance through the Donetsk region, while Ukraine is trying to slow the offensive and defend its remaining major cities. The battle has caused widespread destruction and forced many civilians to leave frontline communities.

The competing claims over Kostiantynivka also show how difficult it has become to establish a clear picture of territorial control during fast moving battles. Both Russia and Ukraine regularly issue statements about battlefield developments, but independent confirmation can take time, especially when fighting continues inside cities and nearby settlements.

For now, Russia says Kostiantynivka has been captured, while Ukraine says its soldiers continue to hold positions and defend the city. Independent battlefield assessments cited in current reporting have also questioned Moscow’s claim of complete control.

The situation around the city is expected to remain closely watched because of its importance to Ukraine’s wider defensive system in Donetsk. Any confirmed change in control could influence the direction of future fighting and increase pressure on other major cities still held by Ukraine in the eastern region.

As fighting continues, the final status of Kostiantynivka remains disputed. More reliable information is expected to emerge as independent analysts examine battlefield movements, satellite images and verified footage from the area.
