Mumbai The bodies of 15 Indian tourists who lost their lives in a tragic speedboat accident off the coast of Vietnam arrived in Mumbai on Monday, bringing an emotional end to a painful wait for their families. The victims were flown back from Ho Chi Minh City after Vietnamese authorities completed the identification process, postmortem examinations and all legal formalities. Family members, government officials and airline staff gathered at Mumbai airport to receive the mortal remains before they were taken to their respective hometowns for the last rites.
The victims were among a group of 32 Indian tourists who had travelled to Vietnam on a company sponsored holiday organised by smartphone maker Lava International. The group was visiting the popular tourist destination of Phu Quoc Island when the accident occurred. They had spent time on Hon May Rut Ngoai Island and were returning to An Thoi Port when their speedboat ran into severe weather.
According to Vietnamese officials, strong winds and rough seas developed suddenly shortly after the boat left the island. The vessel struggled to remain stable as high waves hit it repeatedly before it eventually overturned. Passengers were thrown into the water, triggering a desperate rescue operation involving local fishermen, nearby boats, emergency responders and the Vietnamese Coast Guard.
The accident claimed the lives of 15 Indian tourists while 21 others survived. One survivor continues to receive treatment in hospital after suffering serious injuries, while the remaining survivors have either been discharged or returned safely to India. The victims included people from several Indian states, with ten belonging to Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh and two from Kerala.
Several survivors described the terrifying moments before the boat capsized. They said the weather changed within minutes and panic spread among passengers as powerful waves crashed against the vessel. Many shouted for help as the boat filled with water. Rescue teams and local fishermen managed to pull several passengers from the sea despite difficult weather conditions.
The Indian Embassy in Hanoi worked closely with Vietnamese authorities throughout the rescue and recovery efforts. Embassy officials assisted in identifying the victims, supporting injured survivors and coordinating the return of the bodies to India. The embassy also remained in constant contact with the families and thanked the Vietnamese government, rescue workers and local residents for their support and compassion during the difficult operation.
The flight carrying the victims landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, where officials ensured the bodies were handed over to family members without delay. Arrangements were made to transport the deceased to their hometowns for funeral ceremonies.
Vietnamese authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the accident. Officials are examining whether the boat operator followed all required safety procedures before setting sail. Investigators are also looking into weather warnings, passenger safety measures, the condition of the vessel and whether life jackets were properly used. Reports indicate that the boat captain is being questioned as part of the investigation into possible violations of transport safety regulations.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has ordered a review of safety standards for tourist boats operating around Phu Quoc and other popular destinations. The government has directed officials to strengthen inspections, improve weather monitoring systems and ensure that tourist operators follow strict safety rules to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The incident has raised concerns because Vietnam has become an increasingly popular destination for Indian travellers in recent years. Thousands of Indians visit the country every month, attracted by its beaches, islands and affordable travel packages. The tragedy has also renewed calls for stronger safety checks on tourist boats, particularly during periods of unpredictable weather.
As families across India prepare to bid farewell to their loved ones, the tragedy has left a deep sense of grief and has highlighted the importance of strict safety measures for adventure and marine tourism. Authorities in both India and Vietnam are expected to continue working together as the investigation moves forward and efforts are made to improve passenger safety on tourist vessels.
