Uganda suspends school trips after bus crash kills 21 people including 20 children

Kampala: Uganda is mourning the loss of 21 people, including 20 schoolchildren, after a school bus carrying pupils home from an educational trip crashed in eastern Uganda. The tragedy has shocked the country and prompted the government to suspend all school excursions while authorities investigate the cause of one of the country's deadliest road accidents involving children in recent years.

The accident happened on the evening of July 16 at Chekwatit village near the Uganda Kenya border. The bus was transporting pupils and staff from King David Junior School in Kampala after they had visited the popular tourist destination of Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa District. According to preliminary findings from the police, the driver lost control of the vehicle before it veered off the road, struck a large rock and overturned. The force of the impact was so severe that the roof of the bus was torn away, leaving many passengers trapped inside.

Police confirmed that 20 children died in the crash along with one adult who has been identified as the founder and head of King David Junior School. More than 30 other passengers suffered injuries, with several children remaining in critical condition in hospital. Emergency teams, local residents and Uganda Red Cross volunteers rushed to the scene to rescue survivors. Some of the injured had to be transported to nearby hospitals in pickup trucks because of the urgency of the situation.

The tragedy has left families and communities in deep grief. Parents gathered at the school seeking information about their children as news of the accident spread across the country. Messages of condolence and support have poured in from across Uganda, with many expressing sorrow over the lives lost and praying for the recovery of those who were injured.

Following the accident, Uganda's Ministry of Education announced the immediate suspension of all school trips and educational excursions across the country. Education Minister John Chrysostom Muyingo said the decision was taken to allow the government to review safety measures and transport regulations before schools are allowed to organise further trips. Officials said the suspension will remain in effect until new safety guidelines are introduced.

Investigators are continuing to examine what caused the crash. While early reports indicate that the driver lost control of the bus, authorities are also looking into whether mechanical failure, excessive speed, road conditions or other factors may have contributed to the accident. Police have not yet released a final investigation report.

The crash has once again drawn attention to Uganda's road safety challenges. Fatal road accidents remain common in the country due to speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, dangerous road conditions and weak enforcement of traffic regulations. Safety experts have repeatedly called for stricter inspections of commercial and school vehicles, improved driver training and stronger enforcement of road safety laws.

Many Ugandans are now urging the government to strengthen safety standards for school transport to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Parents and education advocates have also called for regular inspections of buses used for school trips and better emergency preparedness during long distance journeys.

As investigations continue, hospitals are providing treatment to the injured children while authorities work to identify all the victims and support their families. The government has assured the public that a thorough investigation will be carried out and that any shortcomings that contributed to the tragedy will be addressed.

The devastating accident has united Uganda in mourning and renewed calls for urgent reforms to improve road safety. With school excursions now suspended nationwide, officials hope the review of transport policies will help prevent another tragedy of this scale and ensure that children can travel safely during future educational activities.
