The research, carried out by scientists at Italy's IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, challenges the long standing belief that dreams are simply random images created by the brain during sleep. Instead, the findings suggest that dreaming is a complex and creative process in which the brain combines memories, emotions and imagination to build entirely new experiences.

The researchers examined more than 3,700 reports from people who described both their dreams and their waking life experiences. Interrupted sleep and healthy sleep patterns can therefore affect not only how much people dream but also how clearly they remember those dreams the next morning.

Researchers explained that dreams often seem strange because the brain freely combines recent experiences with older memories, emotions, fears and familiar places or people. Without the logical thinking that guides people while they are awake, these different pieces are blended together in unexpected ways, creating dream stories that can appear confusing or unrealistic.

Another interesting finding was the lasting impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on dreams. During the pandemic, many people reported dreams involving illness, hospitals, masks, isolation, family separation and uncertainty. Scientists believe these dreams reflected the emotional stress and anxiety experienced during that period rather than actual daily events. Earlier studies from several international research groups had also reported an increase in vivid dreams and nightmares during the pandemic, largely because stress and disrupted sleep patterns affected how the brain processed emotions during sleep.

Experts say the use of artificial intelligence marks an important step forward in dream research. By analysing thousands of dream reports at once, AI helped researchers uncover links between dream content, personality traits, emotional wellbeing and sleep habits that might otherwise have remained hidden. Scientists believe similar technology could be used in future research on mental health, memory and even neurological disorders.

Although dreams have been studied for decades, many questions remain unanswered. Researchers say the latest findings strengthen the idea that dreams may help the brain organise memories, process emotions and prepare people for future situations by allowing the mind to safely explore different possibilities during sleep.

Scientists also caution against viewing dreams as predictions or hidden messages. Instead, they say dreams are better understood as reflections of the brain's natural ability to combine memories, feelings and imagination into unique experiences. While some dreams may feel incredibly real and others may seem completely illogical, both are products of the same remarkable process taking place inside the sleeping brain.

The researchers hope their findings will encourage further studies into how dreams contribute to emotional wellbeing, memory formation and overall brain health. As scientists continue to unlock the mysteries of sleep, dreams may provide valuable clues about how the human mind works, not only during the night but also in everyday life.
