Vatican City: The Catholic Church in China marked an important moment on Wednesday as Bishop Francis Xavier Duan Yongkun was ordained as the Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Bameng in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. His episcopal ordination comes after Pope Leo XIV appointed him to the role on June 15 under the framework of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China.
The appointment reflects the continued cooperation between the Vatican and the Chinese authorities under the provisional agreement, which provides a process for the appointment of Catholic bishops in China. Bishop Duan's appointment was made after his candidacy received the necessary approval through this arrangement.
Born on December 6, 1980, in Hangjin Houqi in Inner Mongolia, Bishop Francis Xavier Duan Yongkun has dedicated his life to the Church through years of study, pastoral service and leadership. He began his priestly formation at the Hebei Theological Seminary, where he studied from 2000 to 2007.
Seeking to broaden his academic and pastoral knowledge, he later pursued higher education at Beijing University and Beijing Foreign Studies University between 2008 and 2013. His commitment to learning continued after his priestly ordination, when he studied at Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan from 2013 to 2016.
Bishop Duan was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Bameng on January 1, 2011. Throughout his ministry, he has taken on several important responsibilities that have prepared him for episcopal leadership.
After completing his studies in Taiwan, he returned to the Diocese of Bameng in 2016 and was appointed director of the diocesan formation centre, where he helped guide and prepare future Church leaders until 2020. His dedication to priestly formation and pastoral care earned him wider responsibilities within the diocese.
He was later named Vicar General of the Diocese of Bameng and also served as parish priest of the diocesan cathedral. In these roles, he worked closely with the diocesan community, supporting parish life, pastoral administration and the formation of clergy and lay faithful.
As Coadjutor Bishop, Bishop Duan will assist in leading the Diocese of Bameng while also holding the right to automatically succeed the current diocesan bishop when the office becomes vacant. This role is intended to ensure a smooth transition in diocesan leadership and continuity in pastoral care.
His ordination represents another milestone in the life of the Catholic Church in China and highlights the ongoing relationship between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China regarding the appointment of bishops. The Provisional Agreement has provided a framework for cooperation on episcopal appointments, with the aim of supporting the unity of the Catholic Church in the country.
