Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has reminded Catholics that while food is essential for life, the deepest hunger of every person can only be satisfied through an encounter with Jesus Christ. Speaking during his Sunday Angelus address in St. Peter's Square, the Pope reflected on the Gospel account of the miracle of the loaves and fishes and called on people to reject greed, care for those in need, and live the spirit of charity in their daily lives.
Reflecting on the Gospel from St. Matthew, Pope Leo recalled the moment when Jesus was moved with compassion for a large crowd and miraculously fed more than five thousand people with only five loaves of bread and two fish. He said this miracle is much more than an extraordinary event. It reveals God's loving care for humanity and points to the coming of His Kingdom.
Pope explained that throughout His public ministry, Jesus performed many signs that showed His love for people. He restored sight to the blind, gave hearing to the deaf, healed the sick, and fed the hungry. These miracles, he said, were not simply displays of power but signs that revealed God's desire to bring salvation and hope to the world.
Pope Leo said the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves teaches that meeting Christ is itself a nourishing experience. He pointed to the Gospel account where everyone in the crowd ate until they were satisfied, and twelve baskets of leftovers were collected afterward. This abundance, he said, shows that God's generosity is greater than human need and that Christ never fails to provide what is truly necessary for life.
Pope stressed that Jesus satisfies not only physical hunger but also the deeper longing for truth, meaning, and eternal life. He reminded the faithful that people often search for fulfillment in material possessions, success, or wealth, but only Christ can fill the emptiness of the human heart.
At the same time, Pope Leo warned against the dangers of greed and selfishness. He described greed as a spiritual sickness that dulls the human conscience and blinds people to the suffering of others. When people become obsessed with accumulating wealth or wasting resources, he said, they risk forgetting those who are hungry, thirsty, and living in poverty.
Pope also reflected on the many parts of the world experiencing violence and conflict. Referring to what he called the deserts created by war and human pride, he encouraged Christians to imitate the kindness and generosity of Jesus, who looked up to heaven, blessed the bread, broke it, and shared it with the crowd through His disciples. He said this example continues to inspire believers to become instruments of God's love by sharing with others.
Connecting the miracle to the Eucharist, Pope Leo noted that the actions of Jesus during the multiplication of the loaves find their fullest meaning at the Last Supper, where Christ offered His own Body and Blood for the salvation of humanity. The Eucharist, he said, remains the greatest gift through which believers receive God's grace and are strengthened to serve others with love.
Pope invited Catholics to allow the grace of the Eucharist to shape their daily lives. He encouraged families to begin by blessing the meals they share together and to make ordinary moments opportunities for gratitude, unity, and generosity. He also suggested that the holiday season and periods of rest can become occasions to strengthen relationships and reach out to neighbours, especially those who may be lonely or in need of support.
Concluding his Angelus message, Pope Leo entrusted the faithful to the care of the Virgin Mary. He prayed that she would help Christians grow in charity and compassion so that no one would be left without their daily bread. He urged believers to reflect Christ's generosity in both words and actions, reminding them that true faith is expressed through love, sharing, and concern for others.
