Nairobi: Kenyan wildlife authorities are continuing their investigation into the mysterious deaths of 15 elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem, where preliminary laboratory tests have detected traces of cyanide. While the findings have raised serious concerns among conservationists, officials say it is still too early to confirm that cyanide poisoning was the direct cause of the deaths, as further scientific tests are still underway.
The elephants died over several weeks in late June and July across the Amboseli ecosystem in southern Kenya, which includes Amboseli National Park, Kimana Sanctuary and Kuku Ranch. The area is one of Africa's best known wildlife habitats and is home to hundreds of elephants that move freely between protected parks and nearby community lands.
Veterinary experts who examined the animals reported that many of the elephants displayed similar symptoms before they died. These included weakness, difficulty in moving, partial paralysis, breathing problems and an inability to stand. According to wildlife officials, the affected elephants died within a short period after showing signs of illness.
Post mortem examinations revealed that some of the elephants had eaten tomatoes and watermelons shortly before their deaths. Laboratory analysis later detected cyanide in samples collected from several of the animals. The Kenya Wildlife Service has stressed that the investigation remains open and that no final conclusions have been reached.
