Ranchi: Thousands of students and government job aspirants took to the streets in Ranchi on Monday, marching towards the Jharkhand state legislature to protest alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations. The demonstration has become a major source of tension between the protesting students and the state government, with the two sides still divided over how the allegations should be investigated.
The protesters have been demanding action over alleged malpractice in examinations conducted for government jobs in Jharkhand. They say irregularities, including allegations of question paper leaks and other problems in the recruitment process, have damaged their chances of securing jobs after years of preparation.
The protest has continued despite several steps announced by the Jharkhand government. The government has agreed to cancel some disputed examinations and has proposed investigations and other measures to address the concerns raised by the students. It has also announced plans for a fast track court and an expert panel to examine the recruitment system and suggest reforms.
However, student leaders say these measures do not go far enough. Their main demand remains a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation. They have also demanded action over a wider group of examinations that they believe were affected by irregularities.
The disagreement became more visible on Monday as large numbers of protesters moved towards the Assembly despite heavy security arrangements in Ranchi. More than 1,500 personnel from different security forces were deployed in the area. Restrictions were also imposed around the Assembly as authorities prepared for the demonstration.
Police used water cannons to disperse protesters as the march moved closer to the Assembly. The action came after the gathering grew and protesters continued towards the restricted area.
Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, who has been on a prolonged hunger strike over the issue, also took part in the march. He arrived in an ambulance because of concerns about his health after his extended fast. His presence added further attention to the protest and highlighted the determination of the student groups to continue their campaign.
The state government has said that most of the demands raised by the protesters have already been addressed. Government representatives have claimed that around 98 percent of the demands have been accepted or acted upon. Student leaders have rejected that claim, saying only a small number of the examinations they have questioned have actually been cancelled.
The dispute has also become a political issue in Jharkhand. Opposition leaders have criticised the government over its handling of the controversy and have joined protests in support of the students. The government, however, has maintained that it is taking steps to address genuine concerns and improve transparency in recruitment.
Investigators are also looking into allegations surrounding the examination process. Jharkhand CID has arrested several people in connection with the JPSC irregularities case, while investigators are examining digital records and other material as part of the probe.
For the students, the issue is about more than individual examinations. Government jobs are seen by many young people as an important path towards financial security. Many spend years preparing for competitive examinations, often paying for coaching and study materials. Any allegation of a leaked paper or an unfair examination can therefore leave candidates worried that their efforts may have been wasted.
The Jharkhand protest also reflects a wider concern among young Indians about recruitment examinations and access to government jobs. Similar complaints about examination integrity have emerged in different parts of the country in recent years.
For now, the standoff in Jharkhand remains unresolved. The government has offered several measures, but the students continue to demand a CBI investigation and wider action. The coming days are likely to determine whether the two sides can reach an agreement or whether the protests will continue to grow.
The developments have placed the state government under increasing pressure to find a solution that satisfies the students while restoring confidence in the recruitment system.
